The town is situated along the route of the old A8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh and is just 20 miles from the capital. The nearest sizeable town is Livingston, 5 miles away, which has a much larger population, a considerable number of opportunities for employment, shopping centres and all the other facilities you would expect from a town of that size. Just north is the town of Bathgate which again has many facilities and transport links. History Blackburn was originally a cotton manufacturing centre and later, in the mid-nineteenth century, it became a focus for oil production. Although this industry is now very much in decline, the remnants of this particular trade remain the focal point throughout West Lothian. Education For a small town, Blackburn surprisingly boasts no fewer than 4 schools. There are 3 primary schools and St Kentigern's Academy, all of which have an excellent reputation of high standards. There is also a wide choice within easy reach including the many first class schools in Edinburgh. Health Within Blackburn itself there is a medical practice of four GP's a dentist and a pharmacy. Other options and facilities are available in the neighbouring Bathgate and Livingston. The nearest large hospital is St John's at Howden in Livingston. Leisure and Recreation Blackburn is well served with a variety of leisure and recreation facilities on its doorstep. A gymnasium and leisure centre, riding stables and a swimming pool are all nearby. A bowling club and golf club are located within a mile from the town centre. Within the town centre, Blackburn library and the West Lothian Council Museums provide notable points of interest and learning. Centrally located, Blackburn is also within easy reach of a host of tourist attractions, including Linlithgow Palace, the Steam Railway at Bo'ness and the Forth and Clyde Union Canals. Edinburgh is also close by and hosts the worlds renowned Military Tattoo and festival as well as being home to the Scottish Parliament.
